Find a Support Group
Community self-help groups provide a major support for recovery. There are many studies that provide evidence of the effectiveness of Alcoholics Anonymous as a support group, for example.
Three important benefits you can experience by participating in a self-help Support Groups include:
1. Break the isolation you’re experiencing — It’s common for those in recovery to begin retreating from relationships, due to the shame, guilt or fear of exposure. The community of a Support Group will help you break this cycle of isolation.
2. Meet other people who understand addiction and mental health disorders.
3. Find a recovery “sponsor” — Identify “sponsors” or other specific recovering people who can be relied on to provide direct personal assistance as you work to establish a healthy lifestyle.
Nurses in recovery may experience a heightened sense of safety in a Support Group that is restricted to members who are licensed healthcare professionals. The groups listed here are free, confidential and peer-facilitated.
