What is Recovery?

In 2005, a “summit” was convened in Washington, DC to discuss the meaning of recovery. Although the term “recovery” has been used for decades in the 12 Step movement to describe how people transform their lives from the often-devastating damage of addiction to a healthy lifestyle, this summit marked the first time people with a wide variety of perspectives engaged in a formal definition.

This is how they defined it:

Recovery from alcohol and drug problems is a process of change
through which an individual achieves abstinence
and improved health, wellness and quality of life.
